The Environmental Management Agency has accused Harare City Council of releasing over 250 million liters of untreated sewage daily into Lake Chivero, the primary water source for millions in Greater Harare.
Green stands for danger at Lake Chivero
EMA spokesperson Amkela Sidange revealed residents generate 219 million liters of this waste, citing seven environmental violations issued to the city since 2021, including broken pipes and illegal sewage discharge.
Nationally, 415 megaliters of raw sewage pollute waterways daily, with Harare responsible for over half.
Despite Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume insisting tap water meets WHO safety standards and calling claims “exaggerated,” residents report foul-smelling, discolored water.
Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs Secretary Cosmas Chiringa confirmed an ongoing probe into water safety, stating outcomes will guide next steps. Lake Chivero supplies Harare, Chitungwiza, Norton, and surrounding areas, amplifying fears of a public health emergency.
