Police in Mashonaland West have arrested a man who allegedly stole 11 cattle from his 80-year-old aunt and was found in possession of the stolen livestock in Selous.
Zimbabwe Republic Police provincial spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, confirmed the arrest and the recovery of the cattle on April 10, 2025, at Farm 56 in Msengezi.
The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Alexander Mhalasi, is accused of stealing the cattle from his aunt, Mildred Patsika, over a period spanning February to December 2024. During that time, the complainant had entrusted her livestock to Mhalasi due to illness and her inability to manage the animals.
Inspector Kohwera said the arrest followed investigations that linked Mhalasi to the missing cattle. He also emphasized the importance of involving the police during livestock transactions to ensure that stock is not stolen.
“We continue to urge the public to conduct proper verification processes when buying cattle,” Kohwera said. “Police clearance is necessary to avoid purchasing stolen livestock. ZRP will continue to track down rustlers and dismantle cattle theft syndicates across the country.”
The case serves as a reminder of the increasing need for vigilance and stronger community-policing collaboration in curbing livestock theft.
