UPDATE: US$52 000 Extortion Case Lands Bulawayo Deputy Mayor in Court

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested Bulawayo Deputy Mayor Edwin Ndlovu, Ward 28 Councillor Ntandoyenkodi Ndlovu and former Ward 22 Councillor Rodney Jele over allegations of extortion involving a 50-year lease agreement for a hotel development.

According to ZACC, the three were arrested following investigations into allegations that they demanded US$52,000 from a local businessman in exchange for allowing him to retain a lease agreement entered into in March 2023.

The anti-corruption body said the alleged offence occurred in August 2026 when the accused persons allegedly approached the businessman and demanded the money.

ZACC said the three allegedly told the complainant that an unnamed businessman was prepared to pay US$52,000 to have the lease agreement cancelled.

They allegedly advised the complainant to match the offer if he wanted to retain the lease.

The businessman subsequently reported the matter to ZACC, which then mounted an investigation and set a trap that resulted in the arrest of the three suspects.

The suspects are expected to appear at the Tredgold Magistrates Court in Bulawayo on Monday, August 24, 2026.
