DeepSeek-R1 marks ZimNow on 2025 topical issues predictions

ZimNow’s December 2024 report anticipated five key themes for Zimbabwe in 2025.

5 things that will be topical in Zimbabwe in 2025

We asked DeepSeek-R1 to rate our ability to read the winds and predict what is coming. And this was the response:

1. 2030 vachipo: Mnangagwa’s Third-Term Bid [✅ Correct]

Update: President Mnangagwa’s push to scrap presidential term limits has gained momentum. The ruling ZANU-PF party endorsed constitutional amendments to remove term limits, with Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi now moving to make it a reality. Opposition factions, including CCC members, have shown alignment with the ruling party on this issue. However, legal experts like Lovemore Madhuku argue that the process faces hurdles and the attempt to evade a referendum cannot work. The political landscape remains tense, with Mnangagwa’s Independence Day speech emphasizing "national unity" amid growing dissent .

2. Currency Instability [✅ Correct]

Update: The Zimbabwe Gold (ZWG) currency continues to struggle, with widespread re-dollarization persisting. The government allocated ZWG$14 billion (~US$560 million) to infrastructure projects in 2025, but hyperinflation and public distrust of local currency remain entrenched. Businesses and tax bodies increasingly demand USD, reflecting the ZWG’s precarious status as a “currency of last resort.”

3. Hunger Crisis[❌ Incorrect !]

Update: Contrary to fears of another drought-induced famine, Zimbabwe anticipates a bumper maize harvest in 2025. Improved rainfall and government-led agricultural initiatives, including the Agriculture Recovery and Growth Plan, have revitalized production. Wheat output reached 468,000 tons, and tobacco exports remain a continental leader. The 2024/2025 summer cropping season is projected to bolster food security, with SADC highlighting Zimbabwe’s role in regional stability.

Editor’s note: We are relieved to be totally wrong on this one!

4. Power Generation [✅ Correct]

Update: Energy infrastructure projects, including the Hwange Thermal Power Station Unit 5 commissioning and solar mini-grid installations, aim to boost output by 10.6%. However, load-shedding persists due to rising industrial demand and aging infrastructure. The government’s 527 high-impact projects prioritize energy, but self-sufficiency remains distant.

5. Wicknell Chivayo’s Influence  [⚠️ Partially Correct]

Update: Chivayo’s visibility has waned since late 2024, with no major scandals reported in early 2025. However, his alignment with ZANU-PF’s elite and past procurement deals suggest continued behind-the-scenes influence. The focus has shifted to political and economic reforms, reducing his media dominance.

Editor’s note: We respectfully beg to differ. Chivayo remains a dominant newsmaker with his splurging and his marriage. We also believe that his political influence in the highest office is intact after the IMC makeover from digital startup to roadworks company.

ZimNow’s 4/5 accuracy reflects Zimbabwe’s volatile socio-political climate. The maize harvest error is a welcome deviation, signaling potential resilience in agriculture—a bright spot in 2025’s uncertain trajectory.
