In a historic moment for the Roman Catholic Church, white smoke and the pealing of bells from the Sistine Chapel confirmed the election of a new pope on the first full day of the conclave.
The identity of the newly elected pope, chosen from among 133 cardinal electors, will be announced shortly from St. Peter’s Basilica.
Crowds erupted in joy in St. Peter’s Square, with chants of “Long Live the Pope!” echoing under the bright spring sun. The election follows the death of Pope Francis on April 21 after a 12-year reign marked by efforts to modernize and open up the Church.
Among the frontrunners were Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, though no clear favorite had emerged before the vote.
