Deon Simbarashe Matenda is a dedicated Zimbabwean soccer player whose journey in football reflects resilience, talent, and unwavering passion.
Born and raised in Chaseyama, a rural community in the Chimanimani District of Manicaland Province, Deon's love for the beautiful game took root at an early age—despite facing limited resources and exposure.
"My journey started when I was just 13, playing for Blue Dragon Academy," Deon recalls. "I was still in Grade 6 at Chaseyama Primary School. That first match against Nechitama Primary during the Matenda Trophy Tournament showed me I had something special." That experience became the spark that ignited his deep love for the sport and his drive to pursue it seriously.
In 2016, Deon enrolled at Chakohwa High School before transferring to Mutambara High School at the end of the year. It was a strategic move—Mutambara offered soccer scholarships, and Deon was selected after a trial.
"Being chosen for that scholarship changed everything. From 2017 to 2021, I played at the provincial level every year, and it pushed me to grow both on and off the pitch."
Beyond school competitions, Deon began gaining experience in competitive club football. In 2019, he featured for City Vellows at the Willard Katsande Tournament in Mutare.
His progression continued in 2022 with Majesa Academy, where he played from February to July. In 2023, he joined MSU Zvish FC (Division 2) from March to July and later moved to Shabanie Mine FC (Division 1) from August to December.
"Those months with Shabanie Mine were a huge step for me. Playing in Division 1 was a dream I had since childhood."
He also represented Midlands State University at the ZUSA Games in both 2023 and 2025. During the 2024 season, he played for Rusitu Tigers FC, where he remains a registered player in 2025. "Being able to represent both my club and university is something I’m proud of. It shows my consistency and growth as a player."
Deon's journey hasn’t been without hardship. "Growing up in a rural area where football is seen mostly as entertainment meant I had very little exposure. I often played without proper boots or kits, and I still don’t have a personal manager to help me reach higher levels."
These challenges, however, have never deterred him. Instead, they have shaped his grit and determination.
Alongside his football career, Deon is pursuing academic excellence. He is currently studying for a Bachelor of Engineering Honours Degree in Metallurgical Engineering at Midlands State University. "Engineering is my other passion. It’s not easy juggling football and studies, but I believe in creating a future both on and off the field."
With raw talent, discipline, and a powerful story of perseverance, Deon Simbarashe Matenda continues to defy the odds. "I come from a small place, but my dreams are big. I believe this is just the beginning."
