Falcon College has commissioned a 1 megawatt (MW) solar power plant in partnership with Zimbabwean renewable energy company Cicada Africa, as the country ramps up efforts to improve energy access through sustainable solutions.
The newly installed solar facility is expected to supply uninterrupted, cost-effective electricity to the private boarding school, powering its classrooms, dormitories, and sports infrastructure. The project is part of a broader shift in Zimbabwe’s education sector toward clean energy, amid ongoing national power shortages.
Cicada Solar, a subsidiary of Cicada Africa, financed the entire construction of the plant and will be responsible for its operation and maintenance under a long-term partnership with the school.
“Cicada Solar is proud to announce the commissioning of a 1MW solar plant at Falcon College,” a company said. “This plant will ensure that Falcon has plenty of reliable, cost-effective power for its thriving classrooms, dormitories and sports fields, as the College grows from strength to strength.”
The solar plant is expected to significantly reduce Falcon College’s reliance on diesel generators and cut its carbon emissions, supporting both national energy goals and international climate action targets.
“Cicada Solar has also financed and will operate and maintain the solar plant, so our partnership with Falcon has just begun,” the company added.
The project reflects a growing trend in Zimbabwe where institutions are turning to renewable energy to address power instability while contributing to environmental sustainability.
