Former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi has been remanded in custody after the Harare Magistrates' Court upheld three outstanding warrants of arrest against him.

Magistrate Donald Ndirowei dismissed Mzembi’s application to have the warrants cancelled, ruling that his default was deliberate and that he had violated bail conditions.

Mzembi is facing charges of theft of trust property and criminal abuse of office, stemming from allegations that he converted televisions worth US$2 million—meant for fan parks during the 2010 FIFA World Cup—for personal use.

The court heard that Mzembi had not appeared in court since 2019 and failed to provide a reasonable explanation for his prolonged absence.

Acting Deputy Prosecutor General Tendai Shonhayi opposed the application, citing inconsistencies in Mzembi’s claims of ill health. She argued that the medical reports submitted were inadequate to justify his absence and noted that he had remained active on social media and involved in politics, contradicting his claims of being critically ill.

Mzembi’s lawyer, Killian Mandiki, contended that his client’s absence was not intentional, as he had been receiving treatment for advanced rectal cancer in Zambia.

However, the court was not persuaded and remanded Mzembi in custody until July 1, 2025.
