Zimdancehall artist Chillmaster has withdrawn from the upcoming MOTO MOTO Festival in Cologne, Germany, as legal troubles cast a shadow over his rising career.

The festival, set for July 19, had initially featured Chillmaster as Zimbabwe’s headlining act, fresh off his breakout hit Horror and his recent win as Outstanding Breakthrough Musician at the National Arts Merit Awards. But his momentum has been disrupted by the fallout from a controversial court case that has captured national attention.

The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe confirmed the withdrawal, attributing it to “unforeseen circumstances.”

While no official details were provided, the statement has fueled speculation that the move is tied to Chillmaster’s recent conviction for culpable homicide.

The artist was found guilty after a fatal car crash in which he was driving without a licence. Though convicted, he was fined US$200 and avoided jail time — a sentence that drew sharp public criticism and triggered a High Court review led by Judge President Zimba-Dube, aimed at assessing whether justice was fairly delivered.

In the aftermath, tensions between Chillmaster and the deceased’s family have reportedly intensified, particularly over delays in compensation. Insiders suggest that these unresolved issues influenced his decision to step back from the international stage.

In Chillmaster’s absence, the NACZ has appointed Nisha Ts — the runner-up in the 2024 NAMAs — to represent Zimbabwe at the Cologne event.

While the council reaffirmed its commitment to uplifting local artists abroad, Chillmaster’s legal drama has left many questioning the long-term impact on his music career.
