Two truck drivers employed by a local logistics operator have been accused of stealing a consignment of crude oil valued at US$46,264, which was meant for delivery to a Chitungwiza-based company.

Kudakwashe Chikeya 26, of Ruwa and Hebert Pembani ,33, of Old Tafara were entrusted with transporting 37.38 tonnes of crude oil from Beira, Mozambique to Surface Wilmar (Private) Limited in Chitungwiza. The consignment was loaded onto a freightliner truck, registration number AFQ 3683, with a trailer registered as AEG 5362.

According to prosecutors, instead of completing the delivery, the two drivers allegedly diverted the cargo and sold it to Charles Kambarami at his workshop in Mayambara Village, Chitunwiza for US$21,000. The funds were reportedly pocketed by the accused.

The theft was discovered when the complainant, Liveson Aruminyu — who owns the transport company — monitored the truck’s route using a vehicle tracking system and noticed suspicious activity. He then lodged a report at ZRP Highlands.

Following investigations, detectives from CID Highlands arrested Chikeya on May 24. During questioning, he confessed to the theft and implicated his colleague, Pembani. The pair later led police to the workshop where about 25 tonnes of the crude oil — now referred to as Crude 6 — were recovered.

The stolen consignment was originally valued at US$46,264, but only US$24,000 worth was recovered. The remainder is believed to have been sold or disposed of.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to trace the rest of the stolen product and establish if other accomplices were involved.
