Reckless drivers and ramshackle vehicles responsible for road carnage: President Mnangagwa

Zim Now Writer

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged drivers to be cautious take care and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy to avoid accidents on the country’s roads.

“We continue to lose lives on our roads in accidents largely caused by human error and vehicles that are not roadworthy. I call upon motorists to always ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, urging them to avoid speeding, overloading and drunken driving,” Mnangagwa said.

While passing his condolence message following the death of six people in an accident along the Kwekwe-Gokwe road on Saturday, Mnangagwa also announced that the families of the deceased will be assisted by government in burying the departed.

“I have directed Government to assist with burial arrangements of the deceased. May the souls of the dear departed rest in eternal peace,” he added.

Police reports and justice system outcomes in road crash cases show that human error is the biggest cause of accidents with mechanical faults also contributing to the problem.

Commuter transport drivers and illegal transporters known as mushikashika have become a menace on the road as they have normalised terrible and dangerous driving habits which disregard all traffic laws.

Drivers blame the state of the country's roads for mechanical faults on their vehicles.
