Harare recorded a staggering 2 457 new sexually transmitted infection cases in 2024, with over 7,500 of them being repeat infections, according to the latest data from the National AIDS Council.
Speaking during a community outreach in Hopley last Friday, NAC provincial manager Adonijah Muzondiona said the data reveals a troubling surge in STIs, particularly among middle-aged adults aged 40–49.
The 40–44 age group accounted for 3,927 cases, while 3,229 cases were recorded among those aged 45–49. Women bore the brunt of the infections, especially in the 45–49 age bracket, where 1,844 cases were recorded among females alone.
Muzondiona attributed the rise to risky sexual behaviours, low condom use, and insufficient awareness in certain communities.
He highlighted that Harare’s highly mobile population, especially in informal settlements, has worsened the spread of infections.
To combat the surge, NAC is focusing on prevention programmes targeting adolescents, young women, sex workers, and those in the informal sector.
Community initiatives like Sista2Sista, Brotha2Brotha, and DREAMS are key in driving education, access to services, and changing harmful social norms.
“These programmes aim to create demand for STI and HIV services while addressing barriers that prevent people from seeking care,” Muzondiona said.
