The Seventh day Adventist (SDA) Church is constructing a new university in Chegutu, Mashonaland West, with the first student intake expected in January 2026.

Named Great Height University, the institution becomes the second SDA run university in Zimbabwe after Solusi University in Bulawayo.

The project has been hailed by government officials as a milestone in expanding higher education and decentralising academic opportunities.

Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marian Chombo praised the development during a recent tour of the construction site.

“The works are visible to all,” she said. “You have made us proud.”

The SDA Church already runs more than 165 primary and secondary schools across the country, but church officials say this university will offer an inclusive educational platform open to all Zimbabweans, regardless of denomination.

“Our mission is inclusive,” said Pastor Godfrey Musara, President of the SDA Church in Zimbabwe. “This is a contribution to national development. We are working in partnership with the government.”

Engineer Albert Machando, who is overseeing the construction, said the project reflects the SDA Church’s belief in education as a tool for societal growth and spiritual upliftment.

Great Height University is expected to play a significant role in complementing the government’s whole of society development approach, which promotes public-private partnerships to improve services and infrastructure in underserved areas.

Construction is progressing steadily, with enrolment processes already in motion ahead of the 2026 academic year.
