A devastating mining accident at Starlake Mine in Mazowe has claimed the lives of six artisanal miners, with four others injured, according to a press statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
The incident occurred on July 18, 2025, when a hoist malfunctioned while lifting miners from a 45-meter-deep shaft, causing the bucket to fall.
The ZRP confirmed that the hoist, used to transport miners in and out of the shaft, broke during operation.
Four victims died instantly, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to Concession District Hospital. The injured survivors are currently receiving medical treatment, though their conditions remain undisclosed.
The police released the names of the deceased, identified by their next of kin:

The ZRP has assured the public that investigations are underway. Meanwhile, local communities and mining associations have expressed grief and called for immediate action to prevent future tragedies.
