ZRP releases names of miners killed in Mazowe shaft

 

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released the names of four artisanal miners who died after a 20-metre deep shaft collapsed at Mamini, Umsasa Farm in Mazowe on 28 September 2025.

On Wednesday, police confirmed that the bodies of the miners were retrieved from the shaft and taken to Concession District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations. The victims were identified as Alton Sibanda, 25, of Thivavati Village in Zhombe, Prince Gobvu, 19, of Mhariwa Village in Mhondoro, Kenneth Mhandire, 24, of Eastview in Harare, and Tapiwa Meskano, 26, of Chikwaka Village in Goromonzi.

Authorities said five artisanal miners had initially been trapped when the shaft gave in, and rescuers are still on the ground searching for the remaining miner.

Police reiterated the importance of safety in mining operations, urging mine operators to enforce safety protocols and conduct regular inspections to minimize risks.

“Mine operators should prioritize safety protocols and, above all, conduct regular mine inspections to identify potential hazards,” police spokesperson Commissioner Nyathi said.
