Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is ramping up investment in artificial intelligence and expanding its 5G infrastructure to meet growing demand for connectivity across the country.

In a trade update for the quarter ending 31 May, Econet’s company secretary, Tatenda Ngowe, said the telecoms giant has intensified its shift towards a service-centric model, integrating AI to optimize network performance and personalize customer experiences.

“AI is now central to how we understand customer behavior and deliver tailored services,” said Ngowe, noting that the technology is being applied across Econet’s upgraded network to improve operational efficiency and meet rising user expectations.

The network modernization strategy is already bearing fruit. Data traffic more than doubled during the reporting period, while voice call volumes surged 44% year-on-year. This surge is being driven by Zimbabwe’s accelerating digital engagement and Econet’s robust digital platforms.

To support the increasing demand, Econet has rolled out 20 new network sites and broadened its 5G coverage nationwide. The company says this move positions it to capture long-term value from the country’s growing appetite for digital services.

Ngowe highlighted the strategic importance of data: “Its consumption is reshaping the future of telecoms. AI-powered insights and 5G are unlocking new opportunities for growth.”
