A magistrate at the Harare Civil Court has advised a woman to deal with her husband through legal means if he has taken a second wife against the terms of their marriage.
The gratuitous advice to Kudzai Chikango came after she was granted a protection order against her husband’s other woman, whom she accused of harassment, insults, and interfering in her 17-year marriage.
Chikango told the court that the woman had been sending her abusive messages and calling her at will, blocking her from speaking to her husband.
“She doesn’t allow me to talk to my husband when I want to,” Chikango said.
“We have been married for 17 years, so I don’t need her to ruin our marriage.”
She further claimed that the woman went as far as fabricating a police docket, alleging Chikango was the one harassing her.
“She even sought a docket claiming I’ve been coming to her house and insulting her,” she said. “She calls and insults me whenever she wants, and I have evidence of the insults.”
The court also heard that the girlfriend sent messages saying Chikango’s marriage is only on paper and it will never work, which the wife argued was inciting conflict between her and her husband.
In response, the accused girlfriend denied the allegations, saying, “She is lying. I have been in the hospital since I recently gave birth.”
She claimed it was Chikango who constantly chased after her husband whenever he didn’t return home.
“She’s the one who follows her husband and comes to my residence to insult me,” she said.
The magistrate granted the protection order, warning the girlfriend not to insult or disturb Chikango’s marriage.
The magistrate further advised the wife to consider suing her husband if their marriage certificate only allows monogamy and he has taken a second wife against its terms.
