Former Nketa MP Obert Manduna Sentenced to Two Years for Land Fraud

Former Nketa Member of Parliament Obert Manduna has been sentenced to an effective two years in prison after being convicted of defrauding a nurse aide of US$5 900 in a fraudulent residential stand deal in Cowdray Park, Bulawayo.

Manduna ,43, was convicted of fraud and sentenced to four and a half years in prison, with six months suspended for five years. A further two years were suspended on the condition that he restitutes the full amount to the complainant.

The court heard that between October 2020 and February 2022, Manduna misrepresented to the complainant—a nurse aide at Mpilo Hospital—that he held special power of attorney from the rightful owner of the Cowdray Park stand and was authorised to sell it.

He then drafted a fake agreement of sale and received payments from the complainant in several instalments, totalling US$5,900.

The complainant only discovered she had been defrauded when the actual owner of the stand disowned the transaction. A report was made, leading to Manduna’s arrest and prosecution.

Manduna will serve an effective two-year prison sentence unless he pays full restitution within the prescribed timeframe.
