Harare police have arrested 143 touts in a sweeping operation aimed at restoring order in the capital’s troubled public transport system.
The blitz, which began on Monday, follows growing reports of passengers being verbally and physically harassed, sparking public safety concerns and calls for stricter enforcement of transport laws.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrests — 25 on Monday, 30 on Tuesday, 45 on Wednesday, and 33 on Thursday — as part of an ongoing clampdown on city centre lawlessness.
“During the blitz, 143 touts were arrested and taken to court. Police continue to warn touts against harassing pedestrians and passengers,” Inspector Chakanza said, adding that many will remain in remand over the long weekend pending bail hearings.
Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, Officer Commanding Harare Province, is set to meet with kombi operators and drivers to address the fate of impounded vehicles being held at the Chikurubi Police Support Unit yard, as well as discuss compliance measures.
He will also lead a traffic safety campaign at Mbare Musika alongside the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, the City of Harare, the Vehicle Inspection Department, and transport associations, as part of a broader effort to improve road safety and rebuild public trust in the transport sector.
