South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has dismissed the country’s finance minister, state-owned radio announced, marking the seventh change to the post since 2020.
Kiir offered no reason for removing Marial Dongrin Ater, who had served since July 2024. State radio reported late Thursday that Athian Ding Athian, who previously held the role from 2020 to 2021, would return as finance minister.
The president also dismissed the minister of investment, according to the broadcast.
South Sudan’s economy has struggled in recent years amid communal violence, falling oil revenues since the 2013–2018 civil war, and disruptions caused by the ongoing war in neighbouring Sudan.
The International Monetary Fund projects a 4.3% economic contraction in 2025, alongside soaring inflation estimated at 65.7%.
Kiir has led South Sudan since its independence in 2011. In March, First Vice-President Riek Machar was placed under house arrest, sparking fears of renewed conflict.
Authorities accused him of agitating supporters to rebel in order to derail elections, allegations his party has denied.
