Two Epworth men have been jailed for four years each after violently robbing a taxi driver in April, in an ordeal that saw the victim thrown out of a moving vehicle.

Tafadzwa Chiseva Dumbuka, 18, and Nyasha Masikati, 19, were convicted at the Harare Magistrates’ Court of teaming up with an accomplice, still at large, to rob taxi driver Michael Nyamudo, 37, of cash, personal belongings, and his vehicle.

On April 13, at around 8:45 pm, the trio hired Nyamudo from Munyuki Business Centre to Rueben Business Centre.

While passing Zinyengere Cemetery along Delport Road, the accomplice struck the driver with a beer bottle.

Dumbuka and Masikati then dragged him to the back seat, stole US$50, a wallet with identity cards, and a Samsung A03 Core cellphone before pushing him out of the moving Toyota Spade.

The stolen vehicle was later discovered in Warren Park, stripped of its battery, car radio, amplifier, speakers, and keys. Property worth US$7,379 was stolen, though detectives managed to recover items valued at US$7,249.

Detectives from the CID Vehicle Theft Squad tracked the stolen cellphone to Masikati, who then implicated Dumbuka.

Masikati was arrested in Epworth, while Dumbuka was apprehended in Mambeva Village, Gutu, where he had fled.

Magistrates sentenced both men to four years each, with two years suspended for five years, leaving them to serve an effective two-year jail term.
