The Harare Magistrates’ Court has sentenced 20-year-old Albert Chimukuyu to 13 months in prison after he was convicted of stealing US$10 000 in cash and a Makarov pistol from a client’s vehicle at a Mabelreign car wash.
The incident occurred on March 21, 2025, when the complainant, who was driving a Mercedes Benz, left a bag containing the cash and the firearm loaded with nine live rounds inside the car before handing it over for a wash.
Chimukuyu, instead of performing his duties, fled with the bag.
Police detectives later tracked him to Pamuzinda Lodge in Claudina, where they recovered US$1 850 from his trousers and subsequently retrieved the stolen pistol and bag during a follow-up search.
Of the USD11 600 initially reported stolen, only US$3 450 was recovered.
Chimukuyu was sentenced to 13 months’ imprisonment, with 8 months effective after part of the sentence was conditionally suspended.
