A police officer has appeared in the Harare Magistrates Court accused of extorting US$2500 after generating fake charges against his victim.
Trymore Hweta, 38, of Msasa Park who is employed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and stationed at Fife Avenue, Fourth Roadport Base as the officer in charge is being charged with extortion as defined in Section 134 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9:23.
Allegations against Hweta are that at some point earlier this year, he told one Mavunga that a case of indecent assault had been preferred against him at Roadport.
Hweta worked with two accomplices; Evelyn Mubaira and Nigel Chiriseri who have already been remanded over the same case.
Hweta summoned Mavunga to the station formally charged him on the allegation that Mavunga had kissed Mubaira on the lips without her consent.
Hweta, Mubaira and Chiriseri combined forces to put pressure on Mavunga to pay up US$2500 for Mubaira to withdraw the case.
In fear of prosecution and imprisonment, Mavunga paid "the complainant," Mubaira at the police station in the presence of Hweta and Chiriseri.
Chiriseri verified that there was indeed US$2500 before returning the money to Mubaira.
Tafadzwa Mugabe who had accompanied Mavunga to the police station was ordered to write nd sign an affidavit acknowledging of receipt of the full amount.
Mavunga later managed to recover US$1020 from Mubaira who implicated Chiriseri.
Hweta was remanded in custody and is appearing in the court today for bail hearing.
