The government has given unregistered private schools a four-month ultimatum to comply with regulations or face closure.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerai Moyo announced the directive, stating that schools operating without official registration will be shut down starting January 2026.

"We have given illegal schools a grace period of four months because we did not want to close those schools haphazardly, as this would disadvantage the learners," Minister Moyo said.

"By doing so, we would have violated their fundamental right to education."

The decision seeks to address the growing number of unregistered private schools, some of which employ unqualified teachers and operate without government oversight.

Minister Moyo urged school owners to regularize their operations during the grace period to ensure compliance with educational standards and protect learners’ interests.

"Come January, we will invoke our circulars and close those schools," he warned.

Government is appealing to school directors to follow proper registration procedures to avoid disrupting learners’ education.
