The City of Harare has received four fire tenders, equipment and protective clothing from Operation Florian United Kingdom team.

Speaking after receiving the four fire tenders and equipment from Operation Florian United Kingdom team, Mayor Jacob Mafume thanked the team and said there is need to increase the city’s fire equipment.

“I am aware that we need 25 fire tenders and 32 ambulances. As council, we are going to use the devolution funds and other funds that we have in buying these vehicles.

“We are also concerned about the issue of fire stations and currently, we have four, but we need 10 and the sites have been identified,” said Mafume.

City of Harare acting Town Clerk Mabhena Moyo said the equipment will help the council to maintain its reaction time.

“Each fire station should attend to fire outbreaks within five minutes and this equipment will help us for our reaction time since we have limited equipment,” he said.

Operation Florian UK team leader Tony Burscough said they are committed to continue working with the City of Harare.

“We are striving to source appliances and equipment for Harare and fire authorities in Zimbabwe,” said Burscough.

Operation Florian was established as a UK Fire Service Humanitarian Charity in 1995 and works to promote the protection of life amongst communities worldwide.

Meanwhile, the re-opening of Mupedzanhamo Market, which was scheduled for Tuesday 20 December, 2022, was postponed to a date to be advised later this week.

In a statement, the council said this was to allow the convening of Small to Medium Enterprises Committee meeting held yesterday and the allocation process and procedures will be announced and duly communicated to all the stakeholders.

Mupedzanhamo was closed at the height of Covid-19 pandemic as authorities imposed lockdowns in an effort to contain the spread of the deadly virus.
