Zimbabwe’s flagship Independence boxing gala has received an important boost after government granted organisers permission to incorporate national symbols into the event’s promotional material and championship belts for this year’s tournament scheduled for April 11 at the City Sports Centre.

In a letter dated March 13, the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services confirmed that the organisers, Delta Force Boxing Promotions and Academy —working together with the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board — had been authorised to use key national emblems during the gala.

The approval allows the use of the Zimbabwean national flag, the coat of arms, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier symbol and inscriptions referencing President Emmerson Mnangagwa on belts and merchandise associated with the tournament.

 Officials said the authorisation was granted in recognition of the role boxing continues to play in Zimbabwe’s national celebrations and the sport’s growing ability to bring together athletes and supporters from across the region.

However, the Ministry emphasised that the symbols must be used with the highest respect and in accordance with the Presidential Emblems and Designs Act, underscoring the significance attached to national imagery during official commemorations.

Over the years, the Independence boxing gala has evolved into one of the most recognisable sporting fixtures associated with Zimbabwe’s annual independence celebrations.
