Zimbabwe’s flagship Independence boxing gala has received an important boost after government granted organisers permission to incorporate national symbols into the event’s promotional material and championship belts for this year’s tournament scheduled for April 11 at the City Sports Centre.
In a letter dated March 13, the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services confirmed that the organisers, Delta Force Boxing Promotions and Academy —working together with the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board — had been authorised to use key national emblems during the gala.
The approval allows the use of the Zimbabwean national flag, the coat of arms, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier symbol and inscriptions referencing President Emmerson Mnangagwa on belts and merchandise associated with the tournament.
Officials said the authorisation was granted in recognition of the role boxing continues to play in Zimbabwe’s national celebrations and the sport’s growing ability to bring together athletes and supporters from across the region.
However, the Ministry emphasised that the symbols must be used with the highest respect and in accordance with the Presidential Emblems and Designs Act, underscoring the significance attached to national imagery during official commemorations.
Over the years, the Independence boxing gala has evolved into one of the most recognisable sporting fixtures associated with Zimbabwe’s annual independence celebrations.
Held during the period marking the country’s liberation in 1980, the tournament has steadily grown from a modest fight card into a high-profile professional boxing showcase that attracts fighters from Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries.
The gala has traditionally been staged at the City Sports Centre, a venue long regarded as the spiritual home of professional boxing in the capital.
For many fighters, appearing on the Independence bill is considered a career milestone, offering exposure before large crowds and often featuring regional titles or high-stakes bouts.
Officials within the boxing fraternity say the gala has helped sustain interest in the sport at a time when Zimbabwean boxing is working to regain the global recognition it once enjoyed during the era of international champions.
Past Independence galas have produced several memorable bouts that helped shape the careers of both local and regional fighters.
Over the years, the tournament has served as a launching pad for rising Zimbabwean boxers, many of whom have used strong performances on the Independence stage to secure regional title opportunities.
Promoters have also increasingly looked beyond Zimbabwe’s borders, inviting fighters from countries such as Namibia, Zambia, and South Africa to create competitive matchups that raise the profile of the event.
The result has been a mix of explosive knockouts, tightly contested title bouts and dramatic comebacks that have cemented the gala’s reputation as one of the country’s most exciting fight nights.
Veteran followers of the sport often point to previous editions as proof that Zimbabwe still possesses a deep reservoir of boxing talent capable of producing thrilling contests.
