Drug and substance abuse which is now rampant amongst the youths, could be detrimental to the nation's development strategy programs, a junior minister has said.

Speaking on the sidelines of a "Drug and Substance Abuse" event at Kuwadzana 6 Grounds in Harare on Wednesday, Junior Minister of Youths, Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Tinotenda Wadzenenga, urged youths to desist from drug abuse.

The event was organised by City of Harare with support from several partners.

Abuse of illicit drugs, especially Crystal Meth, also known as mutoriro , is threatening to destroy the future of many young Zimbabweans.

"We recognize the importance of these events because we know the detrimental effects of drugs in our communities.

"We see that the youths are now indulging in drug and substance abuse and these youth are the ones who are supposed to build our nation.

"So, we recognize the importance of these events as we are saying no to drugs," said Wadzenenga.

He added: "As the junior ministry, we are running under the demand reduction pillar number two of the master plan in which we are trying to encourage young people to desist from consuming drugs as we envisage Vision 2030 to become an upper-middle income society.

"We are saying we cannot reach that objective if as the youth we are still indulging in drugs and that's why we are encouraging the youth to stay away from drugs.

"Let's take up leadership roles and lead our nation because we are the future and the future begins today."
