Government has called on communities, local authorities, and stakeholders to unite in the fight against drug and substance abuse to protect the nation’s youth.
The call was made yesterday in Harare by Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, who was represented by his Deputy, Albert Mavunga, during a multi-sectoral awareness campaign against drug and substance abuse held under the theme “Hachisi Chi Guy Kutora maDrugs.”
Minister Garwe commended local authorities and other stakeholders for their efforts in combating drug abuse through youth development programmes and decentralised rehabilitation initiatives.
He also paid tribute to First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa for her leadership in mobilising communities to take action.
“The First Lady deserves our highest salute. She has inspired the entire nation, reminding us that no challenge is too big when leadership and community unite to secure a safer future for our youth,” he said.

Garwe added that strong community structures, rehabilitation programmes, and youth empowerment initiatives were critical in offering young people safer and healthier opportunities.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province, Charles Tawengwa, who also chairs the Provincial Drug and Substance Abuse Committee, Permanent Secretary Cosmas Chiringa said drugs were having a devastating impact on families, communities, and national development.
“Through collective action, let us shield, guide, and empower our youth so they can lead drug-free lives. We must invest in their future and provide the tools they need to succeed in their education,” said Tawengwa.
He emphasised that drug and substance abuse was not a challenge for Government alone but a national responsibility requiring collaboration from families, schools, churches, and communities.
Deputy Minister Mavunga and other delegates toured exhibitions where organisations showcased community-based rehabilitation programmes and youth empowerment projects.
The event was attended by senior government officials, Junior Parliamentarians, schools, churches, and development partners.
