Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has assured the nation of reduced load shedding during the festive season as the company has been engaging stakeholders to implement critical measures to alleviate power deficit challenges.

This follows months of aggressive load shedding caused by dropping water levels at Lake Kariba which resulted in the reduction of power generation by Zambezi River Authority (ZRA).

In a statement, ZESA said it has increased generation at Hwange Power Station by getting the broken-down Units back up resulting in five of the six being operational.

“ZESA Holdings is pleased to advise its valued stakeholders of the increased electricity supply in the country, which has resulted in reduced load curtailment across all our customer segments.

“We have successfully managed to secure the injection of additional imports from other SAPP members to support supply until the Kariba reservoir recovers in the first quarter of next year.

“Our valued stakeholders are advised that Hwange seven and eight commissioning preparations are well on course. To date, it is pleasing to see that the technical aspects are progressing well and the utility expects the first additional 300 Megawatts from Unit 7 soon,” reads the statement.

The company also said the country has a plan to transition its power generation to support a green economy to include Batoka in a joint venture between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

ZESA has urged customers to use the available power sparingly and engage in Demand Side Management initiatives to ease pressure on the grid.
