ACZ board, executives undergo strategic training on ICAO compliance

The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (Private) Limited has launched a high-level strategic training programme aimed at enhancing executive and board capacity in international aviation governance and safety management.

The initiative comes as Zimbabwe intensifies efforts to align its airports with global aviation standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization. It focuses on strengthening policy-making and oversight functions crucial to meeting ICAO’s requirements on safety, security, and operational efficiency.

“The focus on policy-making for airport leadership reflects our tangible commitment to ICAO’s global objectives,” the company said. “It ensures that our governance structures are equipped to implement performance-based approaches in areas such as Safety Management Systems and continuous improvement.”

According to ICAO standards, particularly Annex 19 and the Training Development Guide (Doc 9941), airports are required to adopt integrated systems for managing safety risks and fostering a proactive safety culture.

Officials noted that the training will help strengthen the oversight capacity of ACZ’s top leadership, ensuring that regulatory compliance and safety principles are embedded across all levels of the organization.

Studies by the Airports Council International indicate that strategic leadership training can reduce aviation safety incidents by up to 70% through enhanced decision-making and risk management culture.
