Cameroon’s Paul Biya Secures Historic Eighth Term at Age 92

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, 92, has been re-elected for an unprecedented eighth term, potentially keeping him in power until nearly 100, according to official results released on Monday by the Constitutional Council.

“Hereby proclaimed President-elect: the candidate Biya Paul,” announced Clement Atangana, president of the Constitutional Council.

Biya, who first assumed office in 1982, has maintained a firm hold on Cameroon’s political landscape, removing presidential term limits in 2008 and consistently winning reelection by wide margins.

This year, Biya faced his most significant challenge from Issa Tchiroma Bakary, a former government spokesperson and employment minister in his late 70s.

Tchiroma, who broke with Biya earlier this year, ran a campaign that drew large crowds and received backing from a coalition of opposition parties and civic organizations.
