The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has raised alarm over the escalating violence and reports of atrocities in El Fasher, Sudan, following the city’s recent takeover by the Rapid Support Forces.
Youssouf strongly condemned the grave human rights violations and breaches of international humanitarian law, including alleged war crimes and ethnically targeted killings of civilians.
He emphasised that all parties are obligated under international law to protect civilians and uphold their rights.

“The African Union condemns these grave violations and reminds all actors in the conflict of their responsibilities to safeguard civilians,” he said.
The AU Chairperson called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged the swift establishment of humanitarian corridors to facilitate the delivery of life-saving assistance to affected communities.
He stressed that a military solution will not resolve Sudan’s crisis, and instead called on all parties to commit to dialogue and an inclusive political process.
“The African Union stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan and supports their aspirations for peace, unity, and democracy,” Youssouf added.
