Most boarders were set to travel to school on Sunday, in time for the opening of schools on Monday January 9.

In a circular addressed to Provincial Education Directors in the two provinces, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary And Secondary Education Tumisang Tabela cites earlier alerts issued by the Department of Civil Protection and the Meteorological Services Department, warning of heavy rains and the potential of flooding in some areas.

"The Civil Protection Unit has alerted of potential excessive rainfall and storms between 6 and 8 January 2023 particularly in Manicaland Provinces: Mutare rural,  Chimanimami, Chipinge, Buhera and in Masvingo Province: Chiredzi, Mwenezi, Gutu, Bikita and Zaka districts.

Heavy rains expected to pound the country, says MS... (zimbabwenow.co.zw)

"In view of the warning boarding pupils are advised to travel after these dates. Be guided accordingly," said Tabela in the circular.
This comes as the MSD and DCP warned of heavy rains and possible flooding starting tomorrow.

Manicaland Province in particular still has fresh memories of Cyclone Idai which ravaged the province in March 2019, killing hundreds and displacing many others as the tropical cyclone ploughed through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
