Bread Truck Driver Arrested for Staging US$10k Robbery in Chinhoyi

Police have arrested the driver of a bread delivery truck who allegedly staged an armed robbery with accomplices on Friday, 14 November 2025.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed on Monday, 17 November, that 32-year-old Kenneth Tsvarisai was taken into custody in connection with the incident.

According to Commissioner Nyathi, Tsvarisai reported an armed robbery along the Harare–Chirundu Road near the Mashonaland West Provincial Heroes Acre in Chinhoyi, claiming that US$10,000 and a cellphone were stolen from the delivery truck travelling from Banket to Chinhoyi.

However, investigations later suggested that the robbery had been staged. Comm. Nyathi said:

“On 15 November 2025, detectives arrested the truck driver, Kenneth Tsvarisai, after receiving information linking him to the purported robbery. Investigations established that Tsvarisai provided inside information to other suspects and connived to stage the robbery soon after receiving the money from his manager.”

Tsvarisai allegedly implicated 34-year-old Tawanda Marumahoko, who was arrested and led police to the recovery of US$4,680. Marumahoko reportedly admitted using US$300 of the stolen money to hire a lawyer after learning of Tsvarisai’s arrest.

Police added that Marumahoko later took detectives to the crime scene, where they recovered an Eko P29 ONT 007 blowgun with a magazine containing eight rounds. In a bizarre twist, Marumahoko allegedly tried to flee and was attacked by a mob attempting a citizen’s arrest.

Comm. Nyathi did not clarify how Marumahoko managed to escape police custody or how the mob became involved. He added:

“The suspect was rushed to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital, where he died upon admission. The Zimbabwe Republic Police is currently investigating the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigations are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects identified as William and Spencer.
