Health insurance coverage in Zimbabwe remains critically low, with new data from the Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey showing that fewer than 10 percent of adults aged 15 to 49 are insured.
According to ZimStat, only 8.3 percent of women and 6.4 percent of men reported having any form of health insurance, leaving the vast majority without medical cover.
ZimStat noted that women continue to outpace men in every province, although the margin is small when compared to the overall national coverage gap.
Provincial figures presented in the latest ZimStat visual show coverage levels for both men and women mostly ranging between 5 percent and 15 percent. Harare recorded the highest female coverage at around 14 percent.

The statistics agency also reported that employer-based insurance remains the most common form of cover, with 4.3 percent of women and 3.2 percent of men indicating that their medical insurance is provided through workplace schemes.
ZimStat highlighted that overall insurance uptake has fallen since 2015, when women’s coverage peaked at 11 percent.
Despite minor provincial variations, the agency said the national picture points to a persistent lack of access to affordable health insurance, with 92 percent of women and 93 percent of men indicating they have no cover at all.
ZimStat added that these findings form part of its ongoing monitoring of health and demographic trends across the country.
