Zimbabwe has taken a decisive step toward protecting consumers and safeguarding local industries, with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce hosting the inaugural Consumer Protection Conference in Bulawayo.

The event, themed “Combating the proliferation of counterfeit products for enhanced industry competitiveness and consumer safety,” brought together delegates from Consumer Protection Agencies across the SADC region to map out strategies for improving competitiveness and strengthening consumer protection.

The conference spotlighted the growing threat posed by smuggling and counterfeit products to local businesses, with companies such as SeedCo, Tregers and Eversharp sharing testimonies about the impact on their productivity and market stability.

“The reality is that smuggling and counterfeits are threatening the survival of local businesses,” delegates warned, underscoring the need for urgent, coordinated action.

Delegates identified resource mobilisation, funding constraints and understaffing as major obstacles in the fight against counterfeits. Despite these challenges, participants emphasised the importance of collective efforts, calling for strengthened consumer protection frameworks and policy reforms.
