General Tongo Remembered: 46 Years On

 

Zimbabwe marked 46 years since the death of national hero General Josiah Magama Tongogara, with family, colleagues, and government officials gathering at the National Heroes Acre to honor his role in the country's independence struggle. General Tongo, who died on December 26, 1979, is remembered for his leadership, discipline, and commitment to the liberation war.

Speaking at the memorial, family members said the commemorations have grown into a national event, reflecting his enduring legacy. "He belonged to the nation," said son Rangariraihondo Tongogara. The Josiah Magama Tongogara Legacy Foundation continues to support underprivileged children, and beneficiaries praised the foundation for helping them complete their studies and secure employment.

Government officials, including Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere, urged younger generations to learn from General Tongo's vision and commitment to national development. Former comrades, such as Major General (Retired) Gibson Mashingaidze, recalled General Tongo's leadership and discipline during the liberation war.

A memorial site in Massinga, Mozambique, was established in 2012, and a health centre is being completed in partnership with the Mozambique government. Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander General Emmanuel Matatu said the Ministry of Defence will hand over the health centre to the Massinga community in early 2026. General Tongogara remains a revered liberation figure, with his values and contribution to independence continuing to be honored.
