Madam Boss critisied for Clout chasing

Remarks by popular comedienne and influencer Madam Boss have sparked debate on Zimbabwean social media after she praised content creator Mudiwa B Jani.

The controversy comes in the wake of Mudiwa B Jani’s rising international profile following his appearance alongside global internet sensation iShowSpeed during the latter’s African tour in Ethiopia.

Madam Boss suggested that he deserved a proper welcome-back celebration in Zimbabwe and even hinted at the possibility of him serving as a tourism ambassador.

Her comments, however, drew criticism from many, who accused established influencers and socialites of attempting to capitalize on Mudiwa B Jani’s newfound fame rather than supporting him during his years of consistent work. Critics argue that the creator’s breakthrough was achieved independently, warning against what they see as opportunistic “clout chasing"

Her comments came after Mudiwa B Jani’s visibility increased significantly when he joined iShowSpeed during parts of the tour, an exposure that has seen many Zimbabweans suddenly rally behind the creator, whom some are now referring to as an “iShowSpeed lite” due to his energetic style.

However, Madam Boss’s sentiments sparked backlash from sections of the public, with many accusing established influencers and socialites of opportunism and attempting to ride on Mudiwa B Jani’s newfound global exposure. Critics argue that the creator had been producing content consistently for years without receiving meaningful recognition or support from local celebrities.

Commentator Maxwell Muguni noted that Mudiwa B Jani’s breakthrough came without backing from Zimbabwean socialites, emphasizing that "he “gate-crashed the iShowSpeed Zimbabwe tour and organically went global". He added that the situation should serve as a lesson for Zimbabweans to support creatives during their struggling phases rather than only celebrating them once they achieve success, warning against “stealing their hard-earned limelight.”

Others echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that

"Mudiwa B Jani’s content had often been overlooked because it did not follow the popular skit-based format dominant on local platforms." Argued Kudzai T Mukondomi.

"people were now pretending to value creativity only because of iShowSpeed’s influence, saying that organizing welcome parties felt unnecessary and exploitative rather than genuinely supportive." Cantinued  Mukondami

Some responses were more direct and personal. Social media user Shiki Stacie accused Madam Boss of trying to benefit from someone else’s momentum, urging her to let the young creator focus on his journey without interference.

"As usual u want to ride someone's else's wave, stop it  Ngundu. Let him do what he is doing .Now u recognize him because ishowspeed came to Zimbabwe "

Another commentator, Xolie Mor, criticized what they described as overwhelming attention from Zimbabwean socialites, stressing the importance of privacy and allowing Mudiwa B Jani to continue pursuing his goals without pressure or distractions.
