CAF Upholds Senegal AFCON Win, Hands Fines and Bans to Both Teams

The Confederation of African Football has dismissed Morocco’s appeal to have Senegal stripped of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, instead imposing heavy fines and suspensions on both finalists following chaotic scenes during the final.

In its ruling, CAF confirmed that Senegal will retain the AFCON crown but announced financial penalties totalling US$615 000 against the Senegalese Football Federation, while the Moroccan Football Federation was fined US$300 000.

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw was handed a five-match suspension from all CAF competitions and fined US$100 000 for conduct deemed to have brought the game into disrepute. Senegal players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were each banned for two CAF matches after being found guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct towards match officials.

CAF further fined Morocco US$200 000 over the conduct of ball boys during the final, ruling that their actions contributed to the disorder.

The sanctions follow Morocco’s unsuccessful attempt to overturn the final result, with CAF maintaining that the outcome of the match would stand despite the misconduct that marred the showpiece event.

The decision brings an end to weeks of speculation surrounding the controversial final, with both nations now set to serve their respective punishments under CAF regulations.
