The Parliament of Zimbabwe Portfolio Committee on Local Government, Public Works and National Housing has conducted an oversight visit to Chipinge Town Council following a petition submitted by residents raising concerns over the municipality’s operations.
During the visit, the committee reviewed governance and administrative practices at the local authority, examining issues related to financial management and service delivery.
Lawmakers scrutinised the council’s billing systems, rate-setting processes and property management practices as part of the oversight exercise.
The committee said the visit was triggered after “a petition submitted by residents to Parliament” raised concerns that warranted parliamentary attention.

Council officials acknowledged past compliance gaps with statutory reporting obligations, telling the committee that they had previously missed deadlines for submitting reports to the Office of the Auditor-General of Zimbabwe.
However, they said corrective steps had been taken and “provided proof that they are now up to date with the required submissions.”
A public hearing held during the visit drew mixed reactions from residents.
Some community members indicated that council operations had improved in recent months, while others raised concerns about limited communication with stakeholders.
According to the committee, residents also “called for better communication and engagement with the business community” as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and service delivery.
