Former Criminal Investigations department officer Jaison Muvhevhi, 42, who is facing three charges of murder has been linked to six other murder charges that took place in Harare and Chitungwiza since 2020.
This comes after the former CID officer appeared in court on Friday and was linked yet another murder case involving a shooting at a Harare car sales shop in 2022.
There are suspicions that Muvhevhi may have been behind the killing of Nyarai Round on November 19 last year as the same weapon was used for the commission of the offences.
Police now say there is a high possibility that they could settle other unresolved murder cases in which they believe the same weapon used in those cases is the same one that might have been used in the Wedza shootings.
As a result, police have sent bullet casings obtained from the respective crime scenes as evidence for forensic ballistic analysis to ascertain whether they were discharged from Muvhevhi’s firearm.
“We are looking at the possibility that Muvhevhi could have committed other cases using his firearm,” said national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
“Remember, through the ballistic analysis, we managed to link him to the murder which happened on November 19 last year. We are certainly looking at that possibility.”
Ass Comm Nyathi said the public will be updated as soon as results of the ballistic analysis are out while another senior police source privy to the case said there could be a breakthrough in as many as six other unresolved homicide cases.
“Evidence on the ground has linked him to a number of murders in Harare and Chitungwiza. There are traces of evidence showing that some murder cases were committed using the same firearm that was used on the Wedza victims . . . At the moment, I can’t reveal the cases we are looking at because that can jeopardise investigations . . . We are waiting for ballistic evidence on several cases we suspect him of,” said the police source.
On Friday, Muvhevhi appeared before Harare magistrate Evelyn Mashavirakure who remanded him in custody to February 6.
It is the State’s case that Muvhevhi killed Round, 33, of Domboshava, Chrispen Kanerusine, 48, of Wedza, Wedza Police Station Officer-in-Charge Inspector Maxwell Hove, 43, and 27-year-old Munashe Majani, who was a bartender at Ruzema Bottle Store, Mukamba Business Centre, in Wedza.
He is also being accused of attempting to kill Tendai Mugova, a police officer at Wedza Police Station, and Raphael Nyahwema at Mutare Boys High School, where he had gone to look for food as he tried to escape into Mozambique.
The court heard that on November 19 last year, at around 9.30pm, Nyasha Eusen was in the company of Round at Clan Court in Eastlea, Harare.
Muvhevhi reportedly approached them and fatally shot Round once on the head for an unknown reason.
