Savage at 9-0: Mkandla Dominates as ANSA Race Heats Up

Monica “Savage” Mkandla celebrates her victory at Emperor's Palace last Friday night

Zimbabwean boxing sensation Monica Mkandla continued her rapid ascent on the international stage with a composed victory over South Africa’s Thema Zuma in a non-title bantamweight contest held at Emperor's Palace over the weekend.

The unbeaten Mkandla delivered a tactically disciplined performance to outbox her more experienced opponent, controlling the tempo and exchanges to secure a decisive win. The result extended her flawless professional record to 9-0, reinforcing her status as one of Zimbabwe’s brightest boxing prospects.

Zuma, nicknamed “Stone Cold,” entered the bout with a wealth of experience, including a decorated career that has seen her claim the South African super flyweight title on three occasions. However, Mkandla’s superior ring management and conditioning proved telling, as she neutralised her opponent’s strengths to emerge victorious.

The win caps a significant period for Mkandla, nicknamed “Savage”, who continues to build momentum both inside and outside the ring with growing recognition across the region and at home.

Meanwhile, attention has also turned to the Annual National Sports Awards after the Sports and Recreation Commission unveiled the 2025 nominees at a ceremony held at the National Sports Stadium on Friday. The awards ceremony is scheduled for May.

Reigning Sportsperson of the Year Tapiwanashe Makarawu headlines the nominations once again and will be aiming to retain his title following another impressive season. He faces strong competition from Zimbabwe Cricket star Sikandar Raza and tennis player Sasha Chimedza in the flagship category.
