Zimbabwe’s Young Warriors and Mighty Warriors Exit CAF Schools Tournament

Zimbabwe’s debut as hosts of the CAF African Schools Football Championship came to an end in the group stages, as both the boys' and girls' national junior teams bowed out of the competition. Despite showing flashes of promise on home soil, the local favorites were unable to secure the results needed to advance to the knockout rounds.

The tournament started with a glimmer of hope as both squads managed to secure points in their opening fixtures. However, the momentum shifted quickly during a decisive second match day.

The boys' team opened their campaign with a gritty 1-1 draw against Uganda. Their path to the semi-finals was derailed by a narrow 2-1 defeat to Morocco, followed by a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. Ultimately, the two draws and a loss were not enough to propel them into the top four.

The girls' side also started competitively with a 2-2 draw in their first match. Their campaign grew more difficult as the tournament progressed, suffering a 1-0 loss to Congo and a final 3-1 defeat to Zambia, finishing the group stage without a victory.

Despite the early exits, the technical benches viewed the tournament as a vital building block for the future.

The Zimbabwean faithful remained vocal and optimistic throughout the event. Supporter Tinashe Mazorodze reflected the general sentiment that the foundation is solid, even if the results weren't immediate.

"We enjoyed the game and their performance was okay. Only a few touch-ups are needed in the team, but we see something good," Mazorodze said.

Hosting the CAF African Schools Football Championship for the first time marks a significant milestone for Zimbabwe, signaling a renewed focus on grassroots development.
