Togarepi Hails Zimbabwe’s Golden Relay Champions

The golden quartet

Zimbabwean athletes who struck gold at the recent African relay competitions in Ghana have been hailed as national heroes, with sports development organisation ZimSport Development 4ED describing the achievement as a landmark moment for the country’s athletics revival.

The four Zimbabwean athletes who won gold in the men’s 4x400m relay at the African Senior Athletics Championships were Dennis Hove, Leeford Zuze, Gerren Muwishi and Thandazani Ndhlovu. The event took place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in the capital, Accra.

The triumphant relay teams delivered outstanding performances against some of the continent’s strongest sprinting nations that included Kenya, Ethiopia and Botswana, underlining Zimbabwe’s growing presence on the African athletics stage and igniting hopes of greater success at future global competitions.

Reacting to the achievement, ZimSportD4ED chairman Gabriel Togarepi said the victories were proof that Zimbabwe possesses immense sporting talent capable of competing with the best in Africa and beyond.

“These athletes have carried the Zimbabwean flag with pride and dignity. Their gold medal performances are not only victories for themselves, but victories for the entire nation.

“They have shown the world that Zimbabwean sport is alive, resilient and capable of producing champions despite the challenges our athletes continue to face. We are extremely proud of them,” said Togarepi.

The Ghana triumph comes at a time when Zimbabwean athletics has been steadily rebuilding, with local athletes increasingly making their mark at regional and continental competitions. Relay events, in particular, have become an area of growing promise for the country, with Zimbabwe beginning to produce a new generation of explosive sprinters and disciplined middle-distance runners.

Togarepi said the success in Ghana should serve as a wake-up call for increased investment in athletics development structures, youth academies and athlete welfare.

“As ZimSport Development 4ED, we believe sport is a powerful tool for national development, youth empowerment and social transformation. These gold medals demonstrate what can happen when talent is given an opportunity.

“We now need corporate support, government backing and community involvement to ensure these athletes receive the training facilities, exposure and financial support they deserve.”

Founded with the vision of using sport as a vehicle for empowerment and national growth, ZimSport Development 4ED has become one of the country’s emerging sports advocacy organisations, supporting initiatives aimed at identifying and nurturing talent across different disciplines.

The organisation has consistently pushed for grassroots sports development, arguing that Zimbabwe possesses enormous untapped potential in athletics, boxing, football and other sporting codes.

The performances in Ghana are expected to inspire many young athletes across the country, particularly at school and community level, where raw talent often goes unnoticed due to limited resources and opportunities.

Sports analysts say relay success is especially significant because it reflects not only individual brilliance, but teamwork, preparation, discipline and technical coordination — qualities that often define elite sporting nations.

Zimbabwe’s latest achievement also arrives as African athletics continues to grow in stature globally, with several African countries increasingly dominating sprint and relay competitions on the world stage.

Togarepi said the athletes’ success had brought hope and pride to the nation at a crucial time.

“In sport, moments like these unite people. They remind us of who we are as Zimbabweans — resilient, determined and capable of greatness.

“Our athletes have inspired a generation, and now it is our duty as administrators, leaders and citizens to support them on their journey,” he added.

The Ghana gold medals are likely to boost Zimbabwe’s confidence ahead of future continental and international competitions, while also strengthening calls for improved investment in athletics infrastructure, coaching and athlete development programmes.
