Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has lifted the suspension of operation for all Zebra Kiss omnibuses which belong to Tashyllt Investiments (Pvt) Ltd.
Earlier, the Ministry suspended Zebra Kiss and Rimbi bus operators’ licences following a road accident that left a bus conductor for the latter dead, while several passengers were injured as two buses from the companies were racing each other on the road.
Mhona said the lifting of the suspension follows the submission of comprehensive measures that have been put in place by Tashyllt Investments to avert such accidents happening in future.
“After a meticulous consideration of the submission, the Ministry is satisfied that the measures that have been mainstreamed by the operator are adequate to checkmate recurrence of operational behaviours which can be interpreted as violations of terms and conditions of the licence.
“The Ministry will continue to enforce and monitor compliance with the terms and conditions of all operators’ licenses including measures against reckless and negligent driving,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mhona also highlighted that government has made a key policy decision that will transform the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe into a traffic agency and give it the power to enforce road safety regulations.
The decision follows a sharp increase in road traffic accidents that the country has so far recorded.
“Road traffic crashes we have witnessed in the last few months have clearly indicated that we need to take action in the very first month of the new year and engage all stakeholders in a discussion on the extent of the traffic safety problem we face as a nation, with the view to formulate initiatives to sustainably stem the scourge,” Minister Mhona said.
