
Zimbabwean sportswriter Langton Nyakwenda has been crowned Southern Africa Sports Journalist of the Year after scooping the prestigious regional accolade at an awards ceremony held at the five-star Epic Sana Hotel in Luanda, Angola, on Saturday night.
Nyakwenda, who has built a strong reputation for indepth sports reporting and feature writing in Zimbabwe, described the achievement as a blessing and dedicated the award to God, his supporters, friends and family.
“The Almighty once again! Thanks to Him, I am now the reigning Southern Africa Sports Journalist of the Year.I say obrigado to you all my friends and relatives, you mean a lot to me. Your favorite journo remains grateful to you all,” said Nyakwenda.
The award marks another major milestone in the decorated career of the Zimbabwean journalist, who has over the years earned recognition for his detailed storytelling, exclusive interviews and human interest sports features.
Nyakwenda has previously won several accolades in Zimbabwe, including the Sports Journalist of the Year award at the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists National Journalism and Media Awards in 2025. He also won the Sports Journalists Association of Zimbabwe Sports Journalist of the Year and Best Print Media Sports Journalist awards in 2022 while working for The Sunday Mail.

His award-winning stories have included features on Zimbabwe international football stars such as Marvelous Nakamba and former Warriors captain Willard Katsande, with judges previously praising his “shoe and leather journalism” for travelling extensively to gather authentic stories.The latest regional honour has sparked widespread praise within Zimbabwe’s media fraternity, with fellow journalists and editors applauding Nyakwenda for raising the country’s flag high on the continental stage.
Veteran sports editor Robson Sharuko hailed Nyakwenda’s achievement and character.

Zimpapers Super Desk editor Elias Mambo also showered praise on the journalist, likening the award to football’s biggest individual prize.

Nyakwenda’s triumph continues a growing trend of Zimbabwean journalists earning recognition beyond the country’s borders and further cements his place among the region’s leading sports writers.
