2026 PSL First Quarter Explodes: Scottland Lead, Hardrock Shake the League, Big Three Roar Back as Golden Boot Race Heats U

As the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League takes a window break after Matchday 17, the 2026 campaign has already delivered enough drama, surprises and talking points to suggest that the race for the championship and individual honours could go down to the wire.

In 2025, just after Matchday 17, former TelOne striker Washington Navaya and MWOS forward Billy Veremu were tied at the summit of the goalscoring charts with 10 goals each.

Fast forward to 2026 and Herentals FC marksman Ralph Kawondera has emerged as the man setting the pace with nine goals, one shy of the tally registered by the 2025 frontrunners at the same stage.

Though Simba Bhora were sitting comfortably at the top of the table after Matchday 17 in the 2025 season, the 2026 campaign has seen newly-crowned champions Scottland stamping their authority at the summit with 34 points.

Breathing down their necks are fellow newcomers Hardrock on 32 points, adding another intriguing chapter to what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory.

With Scottland and MWOS dominating conversations among football followers last season, the spotlight has shifted in 2026 to the new boys. From Hardrock, Agama, Bulawayo Chiefs and FC Hunters, it is Hardrock who have announced themselves in style, muscling their way into the top five and proving they are no mere passengers in the top flight.

The terraces have also come alive. In 2025, the Scottland versus MWOS encounter at Rufaro Stadium attracted huge attention, but the 2026 Harare Derby between Dynamos and CAPS United rewrote history as an estimated 25,000 paying supporters flocked to witness Zimbabwe's biggest football rivalry, creating an atmosphere rarely seen in the local game.

Perhaps one of the biggest twists of the season has been the resurgence of the traditional giants. By Matchday 17 in 2025, CAPS United, Dynamos and Highlanders were trapped in mid-table before eventually finding themselves battling relegation.

However, 2026 has brought renewed hope to their supporters. CAPS United are firmly in third place, Dynamos occupy sixth position while Highlanders remain within touching distance of the leading pack in 8th place.

The season has not been without controversy. Just like in 2025 when two matches were abandoned before the halfway mark, 2026 has witnessed similar incidents. TelOne's clash against Dynamos at Ascot Stadium was halted due to a waterlogged pitch, while Hardrock's match against Dynamos at Chahwanda Stadium descended into chaos following crowd trouble and pitch invasion.

By Matchday 17, the Coach of the Month awards have been shared by Takesure Chiragwi of CAPS United in March, Kelvin Kaindu of Hardrock FC in April and Celestino Paul Benza of Herentals College FC in May.

Reflecting on the exciting Golden Boot race involving Ralph Kawondera, Khama Billiat, Jairos Kasondo and Frank Agyemang, football writer and analyst Leopold Munhende believes the current crop of strikers has brought much-needed excitement to the league.

"They have all done well. We need as many goalscoring players as possible to make our league more interesting and increase its value. However we will have to wait until the end of the season to see if they can maintain their form and score more.

"Remember we have had players who scored in the first half of the season but fizzled out in the second," said Munhende.Another sports writer, Darlington Gatsi, believes the competitiveness of the league has been refreshing

"The PSL is competitive in an interesting way. The newcomers have staked their claim and look like they are pushing for the title despite Kaindu saying their aim is to survive relegation. Teams that struggled last year have been good. CAPS United, Dynamos and Highlanders are playing good football and that gives the league a lift," he said.

"If you look at the team leading the log, Scottland, they are separated by only 10 points from the team occupying number nine, FC Platinum. So it's anyone's game. It's up to who puts in consistent form," he added.

On the team that has impressed him most, Gatsi reserved special praise for Hardrock FC.

"I think Hardrock FC has been decent. They have made Chahwanda Stadium their fortress and have lost once at the stadium. That speaks something in terms of the club's ambitions," he said.

Despite Hardrock's impressive rise, Gatsi believes defending champions Scottland remain the team to beat.

"Scottland are serious title contenders. They have quality players to win the league again. Khama Billiat, Knowledge Musona, Walter Musona and Nelson Chadya will assist the team in a big way. I hope they'll not be disturbed by cup competitions. They have depth though to fight," said Gatsi.

Football writer Benson Chiguri believes the league has become tougher, with no easy opponents anymore.

"Very competitive and yes, as games progress, the teams are now no pushovers. TelOne, Agama and FC Hunters are now giving teams a torrid time. Triangle is the only team struggling but overall it has been a very interesting first half," he said.

With the title race finely poised, the traditional giants back among the frontrunners and newcomers refusing to back down, the second half of the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season promises more twists, more drama and perhaps a title race that could go right down to the final day.
