Dynamos' Barbourfields Curse Continues

Dynamos' wait for a league victory over Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium continued on Sunday after the two giants settled for a 1-1 draw in the second-round Castle Lager Premier Soccer League national derby.

Despite the return of coach Genesis Mangombe, popularly "Coach Kaka", the Glamour Boys once again failed to collect maximum points at Emagumeni, stretching their winless run in Bulawayo to four years.

The last time Dynamos celebrated three points against Bosso at Barbourfields was in 2023, when they were awarded a 3-0 victory after the match was abandoned following crowd trouble. Highlanders supporters had thrown missiles onto the pitch while protesting against refereeing decisions.

Mangombe, who guided DeMbare during that controversial victory, returned to Barbourfields on Sunday hoping to end the long drought, but Bosso once again denied the Harare giants a famous win.

The latest chapter of Zimbabwe's biggest football rivalry produced another stalemate, with both league meetings this season ending in draws. The first-round encounter at Rufaro Stadium finished 2-2, while Sunday's clash ended 1-1.

Highlanders struck first through a penalty won by Mongameli Tshuma, who delivered an impressive performance in the first half and played a key role in putting Bosso ahead.

However, Dynamos fought back after the break, with Frank Agyemang finding the equaliser in the 54th minute to rescue a point for the visitors.

The match also marked Benjani Mwaruwari's first season coaching in the Castle Lager national derby. Although his side failed to complete a double over their rivals, the Bosso mentor was satisfied with the result.

"I am very happy with the boys after the draw. It is not easy to play against Dynamos and now we are looking forward to our next fixtures," said Mwaruwari.

Mangombe, who has more experience in the country's biggest fixture, said earning a point in Bulawayo was a positive result.

"We came here knowing that it would not be easy for us. Drawing against Bosso shows that the players performed well," said Mangombe.

Once again, both giants forced to share the spoils. But for Dynamos, the painful wait for a league victory at Barbourfields goes on.
