Biggest Buyer, Not Best Payer: Tobacco Market Data Reveals Price Gap

Zimbabwe Leaf remains the country's largest contract tobacco buyer by volume, accounting for more than 15% of all contracted deliveries this marketing season, but Chinese contractor Tian Ze is offering the highest average price among the major buyers, according to the latest Tobacco Farmer Talk (TFT) Market Intelligence report.

The analysis, based on the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) Daily IFCC Summary for Day 85 of the 2026 marketing season (6 July), shows that contract buyers had purchased 321.02 million kilogrammes of tobacco at an overall average price of US$2.55 per kilogramme.

Zimbabwe Leaf tops the market by volume after purchasing 49.37 million kg, representing 15.38% of all contract tobacco, at an average price of US$2.69/kg.

Northern Tobacco ranked second with 36.79 million kg (11.46%) at an average price of US$2.97/kg, followed by MTC with 35.49 million kg (11.06%) at US$2.54/kg. Premium Leaf and Tian Ze completed the top five buyers, purchasing 25.83 million kg and 25.05 million kg, respectively.

Together, the five largest contractors accounted for 172.53 million kg, or 53.75% of total contract purchases, highlighting the concentration of Zimbabwe's tobacco contracting market.

While Zimbabwe Leaf dominates in terms of volumes, the report shows significant differences in the prices paid by contractors.

The analysis indicates that several of the largest buyers by volume are not necessarily the highest-paying contractors. Zimbabwe Leaf, despite leading the market in purchases, paid an average of US$2.69/kg, while MTC averaged US$2.54/kg and Premium Leaf US$2.57/kg, all below Tian Ze's average.

Among other notable buyers, Atlas Agri purchased 25.00 million kg at US$2.22/kg, while Curverid bought 23.78 million kg at US$2.44/kg. Boost, Hail & Cotton ranked eighth by volume with 21.47 million kg at US$1.96/kg.

According to the data, the top 10 contractors collectively purchased 258.07 million kg, accounting for 80.39% of total contract tobacco deliveries.

The TFT report notes that volume leadership and price leadership differ, suggesting that growers evaluating future contracts may consider both market share and average prices offered by contractors rather than volumes alone.

The independent market analysis was compiled by the Farmer Talk Trust using TIMB daily contract marketing data and aims to provide growers with information on buyer market share, contracted volumes, average prices and prevailing market trends.
