The tragic death of controversial businessman and self-proclaimed billionaire Wicknell "Sir Wicknell" Chivayo, his wife Lucy "Lulu" Muteke, and four others in a private helicopter crash in rural Marondera on Wednesday evening has sent shockwaves across Zimbabwe. The fatal incident has laid bare deep societal fractures, triggering a stark conflict between traditional norms of mourning and long simmering public anger.
The aircraft went down around 5:00 PM local time in Mashonaland East province while returning from Chivayo’s rural homestead. Civil aviation authorities, police forensic teams, and emergency crews arrived at the crash site near Waddilove Mission to confirm there were no survivors among the six occupants which included Chivayo, his wife, an aide, and two pilots.
As news of the crash swept through the country, public reactions quickly split along political, economic, and moral lines.
For his supporters, political allies, and high-profile beneficiaries, Chivayo’s sudden passing is viewed as a monumental loss. Famous for his extravagant displays of wealth, Chivayo made frequent headlines by handing out hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, alongside imported luxury Toyota Fortuners (GD6) vehicles and Toyota Land Cruisers, to ruling ZANU-PF figures, apostolic church leaders, journalists, and popular musicians.
Government officials extended formal condolences. Information Ministry spokesperson Nick Mangwana expressed "deepest condolences and prayers to the victims, their families, and their friends during this difficult time," acknowledging the shock radiating across the business and political landscape. Prominent artists and social media figures who benefitted from his patronage spent the night posting emotional tributes, celebrating him as an unmatched donor who transformed lives through direct, unfettered generosity.

In Zimbabwean culture, death is traditionally met with strictly observed dignity and restraint. As the Shona proverb dictates, "Wafa wanaka" a cultural imperative translating to "the dead are made good," meaning that once a person passes away, traditional etiquette forbids speaking ill of them or dwelling on their earthly misdeeds.
Yet for Chivayo’s many critics ranging from opposition figures to anti-corruption activists and citizens struggling under severe economic hardship adhering to "wafa wanaka" has created a complex, uncomfortable tension.
To his detractors, Chivayo was the chief symbol of political patronage, economic opacity, and state-contracted wealth. His fortune remained a point of deep public anger due to controversial public procurement contracts. Most notable was the multi-million-dollar Gwanda Solar Project awarded to his company, Intratrek Zimbabwe, which faced years of fierce public criticism over non-delivery and state fund disbursements. While Chivayo maintained his innocence and was ultimately acquitted in court, the saga left lasting scars on the public conscience.
Across social media and public spaces, voices critical of Chivayo grappled directly with these conflicting realities
"In our culture, we say 'wafa wanaka' we do not celebrate when a soul departs, and out of respect for his children and family, we mourn the loss of human life," said Tatenda Moyo, a Harare political commentator. "But we cannot erase history. To millions of ordinary Zimbabweans who queue at underfunded public hospitals while watching millions flouted on social media, his legacy represents a system that enriched a connected few while the majority suffered."
In digital forums, many citizens voiced frustration at how his philanthropy was targeted at well-connected elites rather than public infrastructure. Others openly wrestled with the impulse to express grief, pointing out that while customary respect dictates silence on a dead person's flaws, the stark contrast between private luxury and widespread poverty remains impossible to ignore.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) and police forensic teams remain on site in Marondera to examine the wreckage and determine the mechanical or environmental factors that caused the crash. Police confirmed that the formal identification process and notifications for all six victims' next of kin are currently underway before full autopsy reports are issued
